Doctors in Brazil call for legalization of abortion
The Federal Council of Medicine supports legalisation of abbortions during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Abortion in Brazil is illegal except in cases of rape, abnormal brain development or when the mother's life is at risk. However even in these cases, abortion is ofter refused.
The support comes at an important moment as Brazilian senators are looking at an amendment that would decriminalize abortion on request up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.
